San Francisco - 1955. Allen Ginsberg let out a howl that changed the world. From “park to pad to bar to Bellevue to museum to the Brooklyn Bridge,” the cries of silenced young men crushed by the tyrannical foot of American capitalism and materialism were finally heard.
New York City - 2014. Walking down the same streets as those Columbia University boys decades ago, you can still hear that same cry reverberating at your feet. The “angelheaded hipsters” may have iPhones and Citi Bikes now, but we are still “burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night.”
America’s cultural, social, and political landscape may be different now, but our howl is the same.
The Untitled Ginsberg Project is our response: a Howl for the 21st Century. Using an ensemble of young men, this collaboratively-generated theatrical event unearths and physicalizes the heart of Ginsberg's most famous poem, creating an incendiary piece of visceral, audio-visual, and experiential theatre. We must destroy the world that we’ve inherited - that is destroying us - so we can build a new, better world for ourselves. Out of our country’s ashes, we will rise again.
